A Grand Rapids Tradition Since 1969

Fiesta Mexicana began in 1969 when founder Maurila Blakely Ortiz brought members of the community together to celebrate Mexican heritage. What began as a neighborhood gathering has grown into a three-day festival that welcomes thousands of visitors to downtown Grand Rapids each year.

Hosted by the Mexican Heritage Association of West Michigan, Fiesta Mexicana celebrates Mexican and Mexican-American culture through food, music, dance, art, and traditions shared across generations.

Enjoy Authentic Mexican Food

Come hungry! More than 40 vendors will be located throughout Calder Plaza, including many Mexican-owned restaurants and small businesses.

Festivalgoers can enjoy traditional favorites such as tacos al pastor, tamales, elotes, esquites, churros, paletas, and aguas frescas. Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the weekend, with most vendors accepting both cash and cards.

In addition to the food, the Mercado will feature handmade artesanías, jewelry, traditional clothing, artwork, and other unique items from participating vendors.

Experience Mariachi, Folklórico, and El Grito

Live entertainment will fill the main stage throughout the weekend, including mariachi music and folklórico performances featuring traditional regional costumes and dances.

One of the festival’s most meaningful moments will take place Saturday at 7:00 p.m. with El Grito de Independencia. This powerful cultural tradition commemorates Mexico’s call for independence and brings thousands of attendees together in celebration of resilience, heritage, and community.

Saturday’s schedule will also include community soccer, a beginner-friendly bachata lesson, and the Reinita Mexicana presentation.

Family Activities and Sunday Car Show

Fiesta Mexicana is designed as a multigenerational celebration with activities for the entire family. The family zone will feature piñatas, face painting, crafts, games, and other children’s programming throughout the weekend.

On Sunday, attendees can explore the Lowrider and Classic Car Show from 1:00–5:00 p.m. The show will feature lowriders, classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and other custom vehicles. It is free for festivalgoers to walk through and enjoy.

Guests should note that the festival has a clear-bag policy, and bags will be checked at each entrance. Diaper bags are permitted but are also subject to inspection.
